A celebration and partial re-creation of the world-famous Lartigue Railway that ran from Listowel to Ballybunion from 1886 to 1924

Experience the world's strangest railway: a three-railed 'monorail' invented by French engineer Charles Lartigue (inspired by camel-trains in Algeria) and operated here in North Kerry.

The original Lartigue Monorail was the the world's first passenger-carrying monorail to operate on a commercial basis. It was one of the great curiosities of its time and its present re-creation attracts visitors from all parts of the world.

Locomotive with twin side-by-side boilers

Carriages divided by the central rail

Ingenious track switching system

Drawbridge-style crossings.

Listowel's Lartigue Monorail and Museum offers visitors of all ages the opportunity to experience a unique form of rail travel. The original Lartigue Monorail ran between Listowel and Ballybunion from 1886 to 1924. Nowadays, visitors can take a short journey on a full-scale replica of the original monorail and visit the museum to watch film of the original Lartigue and see models, displays and memorabilia of the Lartigue and main-line railways.

We are located on the John B Keane road in Listowel, on the site of the original Lartigue and main-line stations.

We operate from 1pm to 4.30pm daily, from May 1st to Mid-September. Otherwise, we open to groups of 10 or more by appointment.
